Kate and Pippa Middleton send secret message on Meghan Markle ‘feud’ at Wimbledon

After months of rumours that their relationship had become strained, Kate and Meghan, both 37, put on a united front in the royal box on Centre Court. They were cheered as they joined Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip, Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, Poldark actor Aidan Turner and Downton Abbey actress Lily James in the best seats at SW19. This was the second joint appearance in a week for the sisters-in-law, who attended a charity polo match on Wednesday.

Kate’s younger sister Pippa Matthews, 35, also joined them in the royal box, sitting on the other side of Meghan.

The former Suits actress was cheering on close friend Serena Williams as she tried to equal Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam singles titles but the US star was thrashed by Romania’s Simona Halep 6-2, 6-2, in less than an hour.

Kate, who wore a bespoke Dolce & Gabbana midi-dress previously seen on her tour of Canada in 2016, arrived ahead of Meghan for a lunch for club members and former champions as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She was handed the honour by the Queen two years ago.

Meghan wore a crisp white shirt with a pleated Boss midi-skirt which had a blue and black pattern.

She will join Prince Harry at the London premiere of The Lion King tonight to mark Disney’s launch of the Protect The Pride conservation initiative, supported by the Royal Foundation.

The “Middleton sandwich” at Wimbledon, with Meghan positioned between Kate and her sister Pippa, was probably the most emphatic non-verbal signal that Meghan should be seen as an integral member of the young royals.

It meant she was hosted from both sides, with both Kate and Pippa giving her attention.

Kate in particular looked keen to signal bouts of very active communication, leaning right across Meghan and using illustrative hand gestures to imply intimacy.

They also shared plenty of eye-to-eye contact which suggests there is no coldness or reserve between Kate and Meghan.

At the very end of the tournament, there was a spontaneous moment of rapport between the two women.

As Simona Halep was told the two duchesses had watched her play and sounded utterly starstruck, Kate and Meghan – who had been standing side-by-side to applaud her – both grinned, mirroring each other.

It was a world away from the rather contrived-looking display of “friendship” they produced during their Christmas Day outing.
