The bill is expected to include a new “green lane” for goods coming from Great Britain to Northern Ireland and tougher penalties for those smuggling goods into the EU via the republic. The legislation will not be tabled immediately but will be brought forward before the summer. Last week, Ms Truss reiterated her plans to override parts of the deal, telling her EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic that unless the EU showed the “requisite flexibility’ in talks over the trading arrangements she would have “no choice but to act”.
