Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL launched late last year with a truckload of new features – from a facial recognition system that finally matched Face ID on the iPhone and could be used to authenticate banking apps, to gesture controls that let smartphone owners pause songs with a wave of their hand – and a flagship price tag to match. Starting from £669 and rising to a cool £929, this was a pricey phone.

And with the Pixel 5 already confirmed, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Pixel 4 successor would command a similar price tag – or more. But thankfully, that might not be the case according to the latest whispers.

Twitter leakster @NilsAhrDE, who has a relatively untested reputation when it comes to as-yet unreleased Google hardware, claims the forthcoming Pixel 5 will come in new green and black finishes. And will start from €629 / $649. That’s roughly £499 converted, although it’s unlikely to be the final price.

As noted by @NilsAhrDE, €629 / $649 is exactly the same price as the original Google Pixel.

With any luck, that means Pixel 5 will cost the same price as the original Google Pixel in other markets. If that’s true, buyers in the UK will see a serious price drop compared with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. That means we could be looking at a £599 price tag in the UK. Given that Google has already confirmed that Pixel 5 will launch with support for 5G superfast mobile data speeds, you’ll be getting next-generation features for its the cost of its predecessor.

Unfortunately that lower price point means Google will be cutting some corners compared with other flagships.

For example, the Pixel 5 is widely-rumoured to be powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset. That’s the same silicon you’ll find in the OnePlus Nord, which costs £379.
