Kyrgios has been struggling with a left shoulder injury since the first set, as he told his box it was “not good” and said he was struggling to hit his forehand. He dropped the first set to Nakashima after being broken in the final game and called the physio to court early in the second, managing to break his opponent before the changeover.
The world No 40 only requested painkillers which seemed to magically kick in immediately as he produced a stunning service game when play resumed and hit sit more aces in the second set to take it 6-4.
But the Aussie continued to grasp his shoulder and wince early in the third set as he started losing power on his shots, and a medical time out was called for the physio to work on his troublesome left shoulder.
